Melamine and HPL: what is the difference?

The substrate and finish are different parts of a furniture panel.

Melamine-faced board

Resin-impregnated decorative paper is pressed directly onto the board, producing a ready surface for cabinets, shelves and fronts. Performance depends on both surface and substrate.

HPL is a separate layered sheet

HPL is made by pressing resin-impregnated paper layers under high pressure. Thin HPL is bonded to a suitable substrate. Select the appropriate grade for worktops or vertical fronts.

Compare actual samples

Check intended use, texture, joints and edge protection. A finish name or attractive decor does not make a wood-based substrate waterproof.

Check before ordering

  • What is the substrate?
  • Is the grade right for the application?
  • How are edges protected?
How do I choose for my project?

Send photos, dimensions and priorities. We will discuss the options and record the selected materials and processing in the specification.
